Day Three hundred and three: Sunday 17th January 2021

I remember a visit some years ago to Atlanta in the USA; it was a fascinating place, with wonderful landmarks including the Coca Cola Museum, which was more interesting than it sounds, theatres and a magnificent Shakespeare Festival which I was fortunate to attend. It is also the home of Margaret Mitchell who wrote only one novel but what a novel, “Gone with the wind”. It was a privilege to be entertained by one of her relatives who took me around Margaret’s house and to see the catholic influence all around, with family pictures of relatives everywhere many of them were priests and a sister, and the occasional statue peeping out from a nook in the wall. Needless to say Margaret made a lot of money from her book and more so when it was made into the legendry film, yet she continued to live simply, and gave much of her wealth away to help the poor. What I was pleasantly surprised to discover that in a City which would be far more famous for being home to Martin Luther King, Margaret was one of the very first white celebrities long before the great 60’s movements to campaign against segregation and the evil of racism. Clearly her Catholic upbringing and her life experience enabled her to use her power and fame to fight for Justice and freedom for all. Thanks be to God.
