Day One hundred & sixty seven: Thursday 3rd September 2020

We celebrate Pope St Gregory the Great today, he is known as the Apostle of the English because he was the Pope who sent St Augustine and his monks to England as Missionaries, having seen slaves in the market place. He was told that they were Angles and he looked at their fair complexion and said “Not Angles but Angels”. From this time and the earlier times of Cuthbert, Aiden and Bede our Christian history begins to develop. In later times it was the blood of the Martyrs that kept this original seed of faith alive, when others turned against it. Perhaps our legacy will be how we passed on the seed of faith to the next group of ”Angels”?
